How To Pronounce Swath and Swathe

How To Pronounce Swath and Swathe How To Pronounce Swath and Swathe How To Pronounce Swath and Swathe By Maeve Maddox When I wrote a post on the confusion between the meanings of the nouns swath and swatch, I discovered that considerable disagreement exists regarding the pronunciation of the noun swath and the verb swathe. NOTE: The noun swath denotes the narrow path of cut grass made by a scythe or mower. The verb swathe means â€Å"to wrap up, swaddle or bandage.† If all you want from this article is to know how to pronounce swath and swathe, please skip the middle and read the part that begins, â€Å"My advice to speakers.† If like me you enjoy exploring changes in pronunciation, read the middle as well. Daniel Jones Pronouncing Dictionary This British reference, published 1967, gives one pronunciation for the spelling swath: /swÉ”Ë ÃŽ ¸/ [swawth] and one for swathe: /sweÉ ªÃƒ °/ [swayth]. Note: The spellings between square brackets are for readers unfamiliar with the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) symbols. Plain a represents the broad a of father. Plain th represents the unvoiced sound of th heard in thin. Th represents the voiced sound of th heard in then. Ay represents the long a heard in late. Oxford English Dictionary For the verb swathe, the OED shows /sweÉ ªÃƒ °/ [swayth] as both British and US pronunciation. For the noun swath, the OED shows /swÉ’Î ¸/ [swath] for both British and US pronunciation. It gives /swÉ’Ã °/ [swath] as a variant US pronunciation. The spelling swathe is noted as a variant spelling of the noun swath. Merriam-Webster Unabridged The main entry for the noun shows the spelling swath, followed by an audio pronunciation that models broad a with voiced th: /swÉ’Î ¸/ [swath]. The spelling swathe is given as a variant spelling, but the pronunciation modeled for it on the audio is /swÉ’Ã °/ [swath]. Dictionary.com The noun swath is shown with the pronunciation /swÉ’Î ¸/ [swath]. Two pronunciations are given for the verb swathe: â€Å"/swÉ’Ã °/ [swath] or /sweÉ ªÃƒ °/ [swayth].† Howjsay.com This site usually gives the British pronunciation of a word first, followed by US pronunciation is applicable. However, the principal pronunciation given for swath is not OED’s /swÉ’Î ¸/ [swath] but voiced /sweÉ ªÃƒ °/ [swayth]. Four â€Å"American† pronunciations are given: [swath], [swath], [sworth], and [sworth]. No doubt about it, English speakers have problems with swath and swathe. Charles Elster (The Big Book of Beastly Pronunciation) devotes nearly an entire page to the pronunciation of the verb swathe. He begins by showing [swayth] as the â€Å"traditional† pronunciation, acknowledging that the word is â€Å"now often† heard pronounced as [swath]. He prefaces his discussion by lamenting: I find it nothing short of remarkable that- viewed from the perspective of the dictionaries- a pronunciation that has prevailed in cultivated speech for more than 150 years can be replaced, seemingly overnight, by a newly minted variant that no authority has recognized, rejected, or even remarked upon. He blames Merriam-Webster for the aberration, pointing out that in 1961, â€Å"in an astonishing bit of lexicographic legerdemain,† Webster’s Third Edition â€Å"gave priority to the heretofore unknown and unbaptized SWATH and labeled the traditional SWAYTH â€Å"infrequent.† He ends his rant with a reluctant acceptance of broad a for the verb as well as for the noun, but pleads that speakers keep the voiced th: However you choose to pronounce the a, do not, under any circumstances, pronounce the th with a dental hiss as in breath and death. It must be voiced, as in seethe, breathe, and rather. My advice to speakers who are not yet set in their ways regarding swath and swathe is this: If you mean the noun, spell it swath and pronounce it /swÉ’Î ¸/ [swath]. Example: â€Å"The mower cut a swath six feet wide.† If you intend the verb, spell it swathe and pronounce it to rhyme with bathe. Example: â€Å"Do not swathe the baby too tightly.† Note: The spelling swathe [pronounced /sweÉ ªÃƒ °/ [swayth] can be used as noun to mean â€Å"a band of linen or other fabric used to wrap something; a length of fabric.† British author Marjorie Eccles uses swathe as a noun in her mystery The Superintendent’s Daughter (1999): Abigail eased her waybetween the stands of wallpaper books and rolls of furnishing fabrics jostling modern and antique pieces of furniture. Swathes of rich, stained-glass-coloured old silk and velvet lay side by side with currently fashionable jujube-coloured cottons, lemon and lime and orange. PRODUCTION AND COST Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

PRODUCTION AND COST - Term Paper Example ystems continue to drive costs of cross-border flows down, local and national economies continue to integrate, gradually or in shocks, into global economy. Clearly, present increasing integration into global economy in developing and developed nations alike is not a simple and direct result of communication and technological advances. This is, rather, a complex mosaic shaped by processes, institutions, and, more significantly, players. In present argument, a statement is made about globalization as a historical process which has immensely shaped international trade and global economy. Globalization is first discussed as an integrating process for national economies, leading to further integration of world’s economy as a whole. Then, a discussion of wider implications for globalization follows. Yet, since processes are not independent but are created, driven, or motivated via institutions and governing laws and rules, significance of international law, more specifically international economic law, is explored. Rules, laws, and regulations of World Trade Organization (WTO), as a unique international trade body, are given particular focus. [T]he process of greater interdependence among countries and their citizens. It consists of increased integration of product and resource markets across nations via, trade, immigration, and foreign investment – that is, via international flows of goods and services, of people, and of investment such as equipment, factories, stocks, and bonds. It also includes noneconomic elements such as culture and the environment. Simply put, globalization is political, technological, and cultural, as well as economic. (Carbaugh 2) As such, globalization accounts for increasing integration of national economies and, further still, for greater efficiencies in production as more and more jobs are outsourced globally (Carbaugh 6) and as more products are increasingly manufactured abroad (Carbaugh 14) for a host of reasons, not least lower

Explain what could have gone wrong at GM over the years, with respect Essay

Explain what could have gone wrong at GM over the years, with respect to quality, to have caused this crisis - Essay Example Several factors played a role that resulted to the crisis that led to General motors ultimately losing out its position as the world number one in auto manufacturing. These factors include union relationships that led ion the differentials in payroll between some of the foreign transplants and general motors, legacy in some costs and programs within the job banks. Other factors include poor strategies in management and decision-making in the development of products and the gap issues in qualities between the general motors automobiles and what its competitors produce. Finally, a major crisis developed from the foreign competitors through importation of automobiles from japan, manipulation of currency by the Japanese government and the foreign transplant in the United States (Klein 2000). General motors for many years has made several strategic errors. As it has been noted, general motors builds automobile in Asia, Europe and some south American countries as the market power demanded it, but they resisted in building small automobiles in the united states. The company did not fully come to understand the relative importance of building such automobiles its market. Therefore, this caused the general motors to try to dominate the small segment in the market attributed to the overall cost incurred and the profit margins in building smaller vehicles as compared to the larger ones. Their main competitors who are mainly the Japanese Toyota company were in a better position since they were well prepared to gaining a foothold in the United States market where they were to make significant growth and expand to even more segments in the market. More problems emerged in the nineties when general motors started manufacturing electric cars just to come and completely scrap the project and destroying all of its vehicles since the company felt that the project

Medical Marijuana Essay Example for Free

Medical Marijuana Essay â€Å"Marijuana is the finest anti-nausea medication known to science, and our leaders have lied about this consistently. [Arresting people for] medical marijuana is the most hideous example of government interference in the private lives of individuals. It’s an outrage within an outrage within an outrage†. Peter McWilliams Author and Advocate for Medical Marijuana Medical Marijuana has found its place once again as the medical plant that is recognized for its healing potential and properties. How the Government has suppressed its positive potential and healing powers for over 25 years. With the help from many patients, loved ones, research departments and advocate groups to get the Government’s attention to see and understand that the terminally ill and the sick should not be treated as common criminals. They are only trying to find some peace and serenity in their last days. The struggle and fight that has been going on for the last 25 years against the Government. The people were finally heard, with the legalization of Medical Marijuana. The Government wants to regulate everything for their own best interest, the positive effect of decriminalizing marijuana for the terminally ill and the positive economic benefits for our community. Cannabis Sativa, Marijuana, Weed, Herb, Mary Jane these are just a few names that this little 5 leaf plant goes by. How could this life saving and healing plant get such a bad reputation? When clearly it has nothing but positive powers, people all over the world have been using marijuana for thousands of years. Cannabis has been around since the Garden of Eden, it is even mentioned in the Bible. Yes in the Bible, in Exodus (30:22-23) â€Å"Holy anointing oil, as described in the original Hebrew version of the  recipe in Exodus (30:22-23), contained over six pounds of kaneh-bosem, a substance identified by respected etymologists, linguists, anthropologists, botanists and other researchers as cannabis, extracted into about six quarts of olive oil, along with a variety of other fragrant herbs. The ancient anointed ones were literally drenched in this potent mixture† (Bennett, 2010). â€Å"Marijuana proponents suggest that the recipe for the anointing oil passed from God to Mos es included Cannabis, or kaneh-bosem in Hebrew. They point to versions calling for fragrant cane, which they say was mistakenly changed to the plant calamus in the King James Version of the Bible† (Kari, 2011). Cannabis was good enough for God and Moses, then how come it is not good enough for us now? The United States Government wants to be in control and regulate everything we do as a United State Citizens. Marijuana was once considered a pharmaceutical medication used for a wide verity of reasons. In fact cannabis has a deep rooted history in what is now known as the United States of America. â€Å"Christopher Columbus brought Cannabis Sativa to America in 1492† (420 Milestone History Marijuana, (n.d.), 2010). â€Å"From 1000 to 1500, the use of marijuana spread further. In 1619, a law passed in Jamestown Virginia Colony, which required farmers to grow hemp. The French and British grew hemp in Colonies of Port Royal, Virginia, and Plymouth. Marijuana also became a major trade item between Central and South Asia during this time† (420 Milestone History Marijuana, (n.d.), 2010). The United States also had Presidents’ who grew cannabis. Yes Presidents’, â€Å"in Mount Vernon, George Washington grew hemp as his primary crop in 1797. Also Thomas Jefferson grew hemp as a secondary crop at Monticello. In 1840, medicines with a cannabis base were available in U.S. pharmacies. Hashish was available in Persian pharmacies† (420 Milestone History Marijuana, (n.d.), 2010). Therefore when did it become a crime to cultivate, possess, consume, and dispense marijuana? â€Å"In 1906, the Pure Food and Drug Act was passed in the U.S. and the Food and Drug Administration was formed. This was the first time drugs had any government oversight† (420 Milestone History Marijuana, (n.d.), 2010). â€Å"In 1930, The Federal Government gave control of illegal drugs to the Treasury Department, they created the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. Harry Anslinger a prohibitionist became the first commissioner  in 1930, he held that position until 1962. Anslinger declared war on drugs and effectively shaped America’s view’s and thought’s about marijuana† (420 Milestone History Marijuana, (n.d.), 2010). â€Å"October 2, 1937, Anslinger got Congress to enact the â€Å"Marihuana Tax Act†, which is to imposed registration and reporting requirements and a tax on the growers, sellers, and buyers of marijuana† (Eddy, 2010 p.2). In Eddy’s report he also writes that â€Å"Dr. William C. Woodward, legislative counsel of the American Medical Association (AMA), opposed the measure. In oral testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee, he stated that â€Å"there are evidently potentialities in the drug that should not be shut off by adverse legislation. The medical profession and pharmacologists should be left to develop the use of this drug as they see fit. Two Months later, in a letter to the Senate Finance Committee, he again argued against the act: â€Å"That there is no evidence, however, that the medicinal use of these drugs [cannabis and its preparations and derivatives] has caused or is causing cannabis addiction. As remedial agents they are used to an inconsiderable extent, and the obvious purpose and effect of this bill isto impose so many restrictions on their medicinal use as to prevent such use altogether. Since the medicinal use of cannabis has not caused and is not causing addiction, the prevention of the use of the drug for medicinal purposes can accomplish no good end whatsoever. How far it may serve to deprive the public of the benefits of a drug that on further research may prove to be of substantial value, it is important to foresee†. â€Å"Despite the AMA’s opposition, the â€Å"Marihuana Tax Act† was approved, causing all medicinal products containing marijuana to be withdrawn from the market and leading to marijuana’s removal† (Eddy, 2010 p.2). October 2, 1937, â€Å"On the very day the â€Å"Marihuana Tax Stamp Act† was passed; the FBI and Denver police raided the Lexington Hotel and arrested two people: Samuel R. Caldwell and Moses Baca. Three days later, Caldwell, a 58 year old unemployed laborer, became the first person in the U.S. to be convicted of selling of marijuana without a tax stamp. He was sentence to four years oof hard labor in Leavenworth Penitentiary. Presiding Judge J  Foster Symes, had previously stated that he considered Marijuana to be the worst of all narcotics and vowed to impose harsh sentences for violations of the â€Å"Marihuana Tax Act†. Caldwell was also fined $1,000 for the two marijuana cigarettes that were found in his possession. Baca, who was his customer, was found guilty of possession of Marijuana and was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Both men served their full sentences. Caldwell died a year after his release† (420 Milestone History Marijuana, (n.d.), 2010). This is why that â€Å"we the people† stood up, banded together, and formed  Organizations. People became spokespersons, advocates, â€Å"a voice for the cause†. Take for example, Peter McWilliams. He is the man I quoted in the beginning. â€Å"Peter was a self-help author, who advocated for the legalization of marijuana. He wrote over 40 books including â€Å"How to survive the loss of love†, â€Å"Ain’t nobody’s business if I do†. Along with poetry and how to use microcomputers. In 1996, he was diagnosed with AIDS and non- Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Like so many patients suffering from cancer or AIDS, he had extreme difficulty on keeping down the drugs that controlled his illnesses. He began to smoke marijuana to control the drug-induced nausea. It saved his life† (US: The Life and Death of Peter McWilliams, 2002). â€Å"NORML, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, was founded in 1970, as a nonprofit public-interest advocacy group whose mission is to end marijuana Prohibition† (Historical Timeline Medical Marijuana, (n.d.), 2011). â€Å"In 1971, President Nixon declared war on drugs. In 1972,The bipartisan Shafer Commission [National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse], appointed by President Nixon at the direction of Congress [and chaired by former Pennsylvania Governor Raymond Shafer], considered laws regarding marijuana and determined that personal use of marijuana should be decriminalized. Nixon rejected the recommendation, but over the  course of the 1970s, eleven states decriminalized marijuana and most others reduced their penalties (Busted: Americas War on Marijuana., 2010). Possession of marihuana for personal use would no longer be an offense, but marihuana possessed in public would remain contraband subject to summary seizure and forfeiture. Casual distribution of small amounts of marihuana for no remuneration, or insignificant remuneration not involving profit would no longer be an offense (Busted: Americas War on Marijuana., 2010). 1973,â€Å"The Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (BNND) and the Office of Drug Abuse Law Enforcement (ODALE) are merged to form the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)† (420 Milestone History Marijuana, (n.d.), 2010). In November, 1976, a Washington, DC man [Robert Randall] afflicted by glaucoma employed the little-used Common Law Doctrine of Necessity to defend himself against criminal charges of marijuana cultivation† (US v. Randall). â€Å"On November 24, 1976, federal Judge James Washington ruled Randalls use of Marijuana constituted a medical necessity, Judge Washington dismissed criminal charges against Randall. Concurrent with this judicial determination, federal agencies responding to a May, 1976 petition filed by Randall, began providing this patient with licit, FDA-approved access to government supplies of medical marijuana. Randall was the first American to receive marijuana for the treatment of a medical disorder† (National Institute on Drug Abuse [NIDA] 1998).  1978, â€Å"New Mexico passed the first state law recognizing the medical value of marijuana  [Controlled Substances Therapeutic Research Act]. Over the next few years, more than 30 states  passed similar legislation. (Scott, 1994). Voters in California [pass] a state medical  marijuana initiative in 1996. Known as Proposition 215(45 KB), it permits  patients and their primary caregivers, with a physicians recommendation, to pos sess and cultivate marijuana for the treatment of AIDS, cancer, muscular spasticity, migraines, and several other disorders; it also protects them from punishment if they recommend marijuana to their patients (Joy, PhD. Mack, 2011) The New England Journal of Medicine publishes an editorial written by Jerome P. Kassirer, MD, titled Federal Foolishness and Marijuana. The article states: Federal authorities should rescind their prohibition of the medicinal use of marijuana for seriously ill patients and allow physicians to decide which patients to treat. The government should change marijuanas status from that of a Schedule I drug (considered to be potentially addictive and with no current medical use) to that of a Schedule II drug (potentially addictive but with some accepted medical use) and regulate it accordingly† (Kassier, 1997). In January 2004, California passed SB 420, which states the guidelines for growing marijuana. Yes this bill also went through the court system. In May 2008, second district court of appeals ruling in Kelley case that the possession limits set by SB 420 violate the California Constitution because the voters approved Prop 215 can only be amended by the voters. With Prop 215 you can legally be in possession of marijuana and with SB 420 you can legally grow. This has drastically reduce crime in our cities and form a more productive society through its positive uses. In 2013, medical marijuana is a thriving and growing business for all those involved from the growers, to the â€Å"caregivers clubs† with their green cross symbols above their doors (yes like the Red Cross, but green) making it possible for the medical community, and the consumer to know they have found the right place. As of this date there is a total of 18 states and DC now known as Medical Marijuana States. With 11 more states pending legalization to legalize medical marijuana. Now legal for others to seek and receive this healing and lifesaving plant. Since the Government has allowed each state to listen to its people, and as it stands today marijuana is legal and available for all those who have a recommendation card. Now it is not a crime for the terminally ill and sick to gain access to the medication that they so greatly need to function on day-to-day bases. You might wonder, â€Å"How do I know so much or even care  about marijuana being legal†? I am also a member, because I have a recommendation card. I have had mine for about a year now. My doctor prescribed it for me when I told him I was depressed (over the death of my baby boy Marshall) and I did not want to take any manufactured manmade pill and have to worry about the side effects. Medical marijuana has done the trick for me, I take as need by my doctors’ direction. I have to say, that it has saved me. Also The Government, State and City get to collect the taxes and the dispensaries make their money and the clients get their much need lifesaving medication. Crime is down and people are employed, and the Government gets to have their say, but in the end â€Å"We the People† were finally heard, and this little plant is finally back where it belongs. To quote one of my favorite comedians: ~It’s not a war on drugs, it’s a war on personal freedom it’s what it is ok, Keep that in mind at all times. Thank you†~ ~ Bill Hicks~ References Bennett, C. The China Syndrome :: essays research papers

The China Syndrome   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The China Syndrome is about a nuclear power plant in Los Angeles, California. The Ventanna Nuclear Power Plant came close to the China Syndrome! A Channel 3 news reporter, Kimberly Wells, and her camera man, Richard Adams, captured an accident on film at the nuclear power plant that would have caused the China Syndrome. The China Syndrome could have killed off a place about the size of Pennsylvania. One of the head operators of the company, Jack Godell, talked to Kimberly Wells at a company gathering. Jack told Kimberly that there was just a turbine trip. Kimberly and her camera man went to Jack Godell's house and confronted him about the evidence. The camera man asked Jack to speak publicly about the accident. On the way to a Nuclear Power convention there was a car following Jack. Jack went to the Ventanna Nuclear Power Plant to hide from the people following him. After arriving, Jack went to the control room to find that the people running the plant were making a big mistake. He saw the people raising the power back up to 100%. He tried to explain that there could be another accident if they raised the power all the way because of a problem with the pumps. The people didn't believe Jack and were starting to raise the power up again. When Jack saw what they were doing he grabbed the security officer's gun and forced everyone out of the control room. After he locked the door he lowered the power down to 75% so the pumps wouldn't break.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Jack agreed to have a one on one interview with Kimberly so the public would be warned. While the camera crew was on their way to do the live interview so was the S.W.A.T. team to get Jack out of the room. Also the people running the plant and who didn't believe Jack were up to something too. The operators were rerunning the wires to make a false accident that would distract Jack. The distraction would make it easier for the S.W.A.T. team to get inside the control room. The camera crew arrived and Kimberly went into the room where Jack was to do the interview. As soon as the interview started the operators tripped the alarm. Jack started to panic. The S.W.A.T. team broke in and shot Jack because he had a gun in his hand. Change 4 Life Essay

Change 4 Life is a scheme which aims to help everyone, but especially children, to eat well, exercise and therefore hopefully live longer. One of the main principles is to reduce the amount of obesity in the UK. It is a fact that people today are a lot less active than they should be and rather than exercising, people are opting to use their free time watching television and playing the latest computer games. This is proven as only 37% of men and 25% of women in the UK currently achieve the levels of physical activity recommended by the Department of Health. Not only has our daily exercise fallen but how we eat and the type of food we eat has also declined. People are now choosing the easy and more ‘convenient’ option of fast food. Change 4 Life are trying their best to react to peoples new ‘modern day life’, by encouraging people to exercise more frequently and reduce the fat intake in their diet. Physical activity helps to reduce the amount of fat stored in the body and this in turn reduces the risk of contracting life threatening illnesses such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Change 4 Life promotes the idea of many different activities, ranging from walking and running to skipping and jumping. They believe that any exercise is better than none. They realise that it is important to have a healthy balanced lifestyle, which should consist of the following, nutritious diet, social life, rest/sleep, free time, physical exercise and control of stress and pressure. Change 4 Life hope to do what their name suggests. Up and About† is the slogan for children with the idea of encouraging them to be active whenever possible. On their website they give suggestions of how this can be done. Many are just simple ideas such as rather than driving to school, walk instead. This not only helps the children but the environment at the same time. They also give tips such as having a disco in the lounge, skipping, hide and seek and dancing. They have also tried to introduce a ‘2 hour maximum TV time’, meaning kids have to try new things out. This would then hopefully encourage children to be more active. On the website they have even created indoor and outdoor games, which can be played by everyone, e. g. the lamp post game that involves racing between each set of lamp posts on the way to school or the shops. Not only does exercise keep you fit and healthy it can help your sleeping pattern, relieve stress so that you feel more relaxed. This is why Change 4 Life recommends that as a family you should try to do sixty minutes of ctivities per day. They say that â€Å"active kids are happy kids†. They also say that it is important to have a well balanced and nutritious diet incorporating at least 5 fruit and vegetables a day. The scheme has loads of suggestions on which items actually count as one of your 5 fruits and veg such as smoothies and frozen and canned vegetables. They also give tips on how to compare food labels so that you become aware what the food contains e. g calories, sugar, salt etc. The way people cook/prepare the food is also essential, as this can increase the amount of fat in someone’s body, especially if it’s cooked in a lot of oil. There are many examples that Change 4 Life give to families to help them, sugar swaps being one of them, so rather than having food and drink with added sugar, they should swap for versions that are either sugar free or have very little sugar. Lastly they have loads of fun family activities such as Swim4Life, Bike4Life, Play4Life and Walk4Life, which are lots of fun and get the whole family involved in an active lifestyle.

Abstract Ecommerce (Sometimes called web- based) commerce is the term used to describe the activity of doing business on the internet. It including business to business, business to consumer and even consumer to consumer transactions that involve the buying and selling of goods and service, the transactions of funds, and even the exchange of ideas. Ecommerce including functions such as marketing manufacturing, finance, selling and negotiations. Ecommerce is not as new concept in Bangladesh any more, ecommerce that started its journey in Bangladesh in the last 90s and since then it continued to grow. This study concentrates on assessing the elements of the environment relation to ecommerce to get the best picture of the prevailing condition and then recommending some areas of improvement on the basis of the assessment for deploying ecommerce in Bangladesh. Chapter- one 1. Introduction. 1.1 E-commerce: Electronic commerce or ecommerce is a term for any type of business, or commercial transaction that involves the transfer of information across the internet. It covers range of different types of businesses, from consumer based retail sites, through auction or music sites, to business exchanges trading goods and services between corporations. It is currently one of the most important aspects of the internet to emerge. Ecommerce allows consumers to electronically exchange goods and services with no barriers of time or distance. Electronic commerce has expanded rapidly over the past five years and is predicted to continue at this rate, or even accelerate. In the near future the boundaries between â€Å"conventional† and â€Å"electronic â€Å"commerce will become increasingly blurred as more and more businesses move sections of their operations onto the internet. 1.1.1 Background of e commerce Since the 1990s, with the breakthrough of network, communications and IT, the Internet had a global growth and rapidly became popular. And e-commerce was born. E-commerce is a new business model based on the Internet with two transacting parties, bank electronic payment and settlement as means and customer data as support, which can make buyers and suppliers more closely linked, and meet customers’ demand faster, and also allows buyer to choose the best suppliers in the global market and sell their products worldwide. Since â€Å"electronic commerce† in1998, e-commerce all around the world was developing rapidly that the transactions doubles in about every nine months. The global e-commerce transactions (including online trade, sales, etc.) reach hundreds of billions dollars, and e-commerce revenue has soared by 262 percent. Countries all over the world have a very positive attitude to e-commerce- the new continent. They generally consider the development of electronic commerce an important driver of world economic development in the next 25 years. The promotion effect to the economy will be far more than the Industrial Revolution 200 years ago. Well-known network economic researcher and critic Robert Metcalfe claimed that: â€Å"The value of the Internet is equal to the square of the number of outlets (linking with it). Currently, the online shops are booming and constantly improved. Types of products sold online are diversity. Drugs once thought impossible for buying and selling have become a reality. Representative one is Canada Pharmacy. Even some people sell their time online. They do things for people who are too busy and get money from them. 1.2 Objectives of the studs To identify prospect of e commerce system in Bangladesh To make suggestion on the basis of findings. To provide precise knowledge of e commerce and its infrastructure. To narrate the present scenario of e commerce in Bangladesh To identify the usage rate and satisfaction level of e commerce customers. To highlight some recommendations for rendering e commerce services effectively. 1.3 Scope of the study The scope of the study is limited to the issues related to the ecommerce in Bangladesh. The assignment will focus only on the business locality provider of the country through internet network system. 1.4 Limitations of the study Due to time constraints the study has been conducted only one commerce service on secondary information. A microscopic analysis (aggregate analysis) has been made here for the unavailability of appropriate data in some cases. To prepare this assignment I have faced a lot of problems such as unavailability of lab, electricity problem, unavailability of related book and journals lock of time, unavailability of information in net etc. 1.5 Methodology of the study The assignment has been done mainly based on secondary sources of data or information secondary data has been collected from different publication material and Web site as well as the book and material from different libraries the hand not of the various seminars 1.6 Literature Review Tornatsky and Fleischer’s Theory The best literature for this is from Tormatsky and Fleischer’s theory. The Tornatsky and Fleischer’s theory comprises two important foundations stages in e commerce factors of the adoption and implementation of e commerce in SMEs. According to Jennnex and lertwongsation who used Tornatzky and Fleischer’s model, the reliability of this foundation will directly impact the ability of SMEs to implement e commerce. Chapter Two 2. General context of the study With the increasing diffusion of ICTS, more specifically the internet, the global business community is rapidly moving to words business to business (B2B) e commerce. The bussers importer gain a clear advantage when the internet gives them access to the global market, by which they can compare price across regions, find out whether price very by order fragmentation, get awareness about substitute alternative products consequently the sellers exporters make sure that they are well portrayed in the cyber world through websites and portals. Like buyers, sellers also benefit from increased and more efficient access to the global market through the imternet. Bangladesh is pursuing an economic policy export led growth with the rising forces of globalization, it is becoming increasingly important that the private sector particularly the export sectors are well prepared to meet the requirements and in the competition against exporters in other countries. In such a scenario two issues are becoming particularly important for Bangladeshi export sectors one whether business are automating their internal processes with the use of ICTS to become increasingly efficient and competitive in a global content and two whether business have efficient and competitive in a global context and two whether businesses have effective presence and participation in the cyber world. 2.2.1 E commerce in different sector in Bangladesh Despite being a under developed country selected segment of the Bangladeshi business community has embraced technology with reasonable success, personal computer and the internet are also emerging as day to day business tolls These positive indicators are levering the prospect of e commerce in Bangladesh. RMG Sector . Banking on the web (online bank). Online shopping. Web hosting, domain. Online cards, gifts. Pay Bill. Education. Etc. 2.2 Some e commerce shop in Bangladesh www.web Bangladesh.com. www.hoat bazar.com. www.number shop.com. www.bdbazar.com www.sonarmarketplace.com. www.upoharbd.com. www.bdgift.com. www.cellbazar.com. 2.3 The impact of e commerce E commerce can transform the way products and service one created sold and delivered to the customers, It can also change the way in which the company works with its partners. The following are well established benefits of e commerce. Improved productivity : Using e commerce the time required to create, transfer and process a business transaction between trading partners is signifieantly reduced of data entry and recenty in the process. This improvement in speed and accuracy plus the access to document and information will result in increase in productivity. Opportunity 1.Since the concept is new and Lucrative, the website has bright future through jot the country. 2.In future, this website may include the merchants of different other fields like FMCG, cloths, Foods etc. Threat: 1.Since the market has no competition any day new entrants may come up with new offers. 2.Discount packages of mobile phone companies (GP Thank you) can be a threat. 2.6 Advantages of Ecommerce Faster buying/selling procedure, as well as easy to find products. Buying/selling 24/7. More reach to customers, there is no theoretical geographic limitations. Low operational costs and better quality of services. No need of physical company set-ups. And there are many bad sites which eat up customers’ money. There is no guarantee of product quality. Mechanical failures can cause unpredictable effects on the total processes. There are many hackers who look for opportunities, and thus an ecommerce site, service, payment gateways, all are always prone to attack. Chapter three 3. Methodology of the study 3.1 Site Selection: The topic chosen for the assignment is â€Å"e commerce system.† 3.4 Site Design: I work with non-government sector and also include government sector. 3.5 Country Map: 3.6 Data Collection: All the data and inflation which s elated to my task was collected from secondary sure. 3.7 Data Analysis: I use Microsoft word and Microsoft power point to prepare this assignment. Chapter four 4. Result and Discussion Bangladesh has recently entered into the world of e-commerce. Bangladesh Bank (BB) opened up the e-commerce transactions in the net in 2009. Subsequently Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited (DDBL) has launched Internet Payment Gateway (IPG) in the name of Nexus-Gateway in June, 2010 and BRAC Bank in December, 2010. Meantime, a few e-merchants have developed their web-sites and linked with the IPG of the banks. The complete journey of e-commerce has four steps. These include the go-ahead signal of the central bank, launching internet payment gateway (IPG) by commercial banks after obtaining go ahead signal of the central bank, development of appropriate website by e-merchants to display and sale their products and services, and buying of goods and services by the customers from the e-merchants. The merchant commission — a fee to be paid by the merchant to the bank in percentage of the sale value — is higher for e-commerce transaction than that of the POS transaction. The e-merchant also needs to pay a fee to the owner of the web portal if the website is not owned by him. On the other hand, an e-merchant does not require establishing shops at the prominent and costly locations of a city; they only have to maintain warehouses in various low cost locations from where they can deliver goods to the different parts of the city / country easily with minimum transportation cost. The ultimate result is: the e-commerce players are at a competitive advantage to retailers. They have lower operating expenses and better inventory management due to operating in a virtual commerce environment. For example, amazon.com has revenue per employee of nearly $850k while its retail counterpart, Best Buy, generates revenue per employee of only $270k. Chapter five 5. Recommendations The assessment of the e-commerce environmental forces of Bangladesh leave us some room to recommend some steps and measures, that should be undertaken by the policy makers and business stake holders for the full-fledged implementation and development of e-commerce in Bangladesh. There commendations are: There should be an EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer) Gateway, which will connect all finance and banking institutions, ATMs, POS and related websites. Such Gateway will speed up the transactions among banks, commercial institutions. This sort of infrastructure needs to be implemented on priority basis. A CCG (Credit Card Gateway) should be established. A credit card gateway is a server that makes online credit card transactions safe(Skinner, 2005). The software protocols in the CCG use the information provided to check for availability of funds and to make sure the credit card is not expired, lost or stolen. This takes only seconds. When the transaction is approved a receipt is generated for the customer, and the funds are transferred to the vendor’s bank account through EFT. Unlicensed radio frequencies should be made available on demand andesite operating licenses should not limit the bandwidth. To improve banking mechanism, Bangladesh government should compel the banking sectors to automate their operation and going online by a specific period. The control of foreign exchange should be liberalized gradually, and easier issuance of International Credit Cards should be allowed, banks should take effective steps here. Business associations and organizations should be made aware of the benefits of e-commerce. Business organizations like FBCCI, DCCI, MCCI, and BGMEA can play a significant role in promoting e-commerce in Bangladesh. Political commitment to improve governance and institutional strengths essential for successful application of e-commerce. Last but not least, National ICT policy, 2002 and enactment of the ICTAct, 2005 is required to enhance the implementation of e-commerce. 6. CONCLUSION A key reason why e-commerce, especially the business-to-business segment, is growing so quickly is its significant impact on costs associated with inventories, sales execution, procurement, intangibles like banking, and distribution costs. If these reductions become pervasive, e-commerce has the potential to be the application that ushers in the large productivity gains. Achieving these gains is therefore contingent on a number of factors, including access to e-commerce systems and the needed skills. However, what is unique about ecommerce over the Internet and the efficiency gains is that it promises the premium placed on openness. To reap the potential cost savings fully, firms must be willing to open up their internal systems to suppliers and customers. This raises policy issues concerning security and potential anti-competitive effects as firms integrate their operations more closely. Effective Classroom Management Essays

Effective Classroom Management Essays Effective Classroom Management Essay Effective Classroom Management Essay Effective Classroom Management When I was an undergraduate, I looked to strengthening my mathematics skills so I could know as much as possible about the subject area I was going to teach. I also knew that I would need other skills to teach in a high school classroom as well. In fact, I felt that in order to be an effective teacher, I needed to have good classroom management skills. The article I read on the subject is titled Effective Classroom Management: Teacher Preparation and Professional Development written by Regina M. Oliver and Daniel J. Reschly from Vanderbilt University. The paper starts out stating that classes with economically disadvantaged students tend to have disruptive behavior as a problem. This is why teachers need to have effective classroom management techniques. Without this, not only do the students described above have low achievement in the classroom but at-risk students fall prey to this as well when the teacher does not have firm control of his or her class. The article goes on to say that ongoing professional development is important for improving classroom management skills. This is a good way to help new teachers get some good ideas for their classes, as well as seasoned teachers who need to improve on their current management skills. There were two recommendations to schools that in theory would best help new teachers with much needed classroom management skills. The first is to provide teachers with instructional approaches through coursework and guided practice with feedback. This involves developing instructional material that students will find educationally relevant, a logical order related to skill development and immediate feedback to the student and to correct any errors the student has during the process of learning in the class. The second recommendation is to address those challenges that teachers face and to create a positive classroom context. This involves clearly stated rules for the classroom that are kept at a minimum, are positively stated, simple and appropriate to the developmental level of the students, and are aligned with school policy. With these rules in place, it is something that students know from the beginning and as long as they are constantly and consistently enforced, the students know exactly whatâ„ ¢s expected of them. They will know the consequences of their actions should they decide to break the rules. In conclusion, this article offered some interesting comments on effective classroom management. It also provided some recommendations for providing new and experienced teachers with professional development to help with their existing ideas on how to have a firm hold on classroom behavior. Another thing I liked about this article was that classroom management did not focus strictly on student behavior, but on the fact that the material being taught as well as the way it is being taught is key to keeping the students involved in the learning process rather than on other distractions. Word Choice Cord vs. Chord - Proofeds Writing Tips Blog

Word Choice Cord vs. Chord Word Choice: Cord vs. Chord Homonyms are words that sound identical but differ in meaning. As you might have already found, these tricky terms can be problematic. Fear not, though! Proofed is here to guide you through your vocabulary-based crises. Today in our ongoing Word Choice series, we tackle â€Å"cord† and â€Å"chord,† which are confusingly similar even before you get into their tangled etymologies (which, for the sake of simplicity, we’ll ignore). Cord (A String or Rope) The noun â€Å"cord† can mean a number of things, but the most common uses are to mean â€Å"a length of rope† or â€Å"an electrical cable.† Specifically, the term â€Å"cord† is used when describing flexible material thicker than a string but thinner than a rope, or the insulated wire connecting an electrical device to power source: After wrestling Jeremy to the ground, Matilda hogtied him with a length of cord. It was an hour before Boris realized his computer was missing its power cord. Another common context in which the word â€Å"cord† appears is medicine, where it applies to certain anatomical structures (e.g., â€Å"umbilical cord,† â€Å"vocal cords†). There are a few additional definitions too, such as a measurement for cut wood or the raised ribs on corduroy pants; these latter meanings are quite specialized though, so you probably don’t need to memorize them. Chord (A Pleasing Musical Arrangement) The word â€Å"chord† is a noun describing â€Å"three or more musical tones being played simultaneously.† On guitar, for example, the chord C is composed of the notes C, E and G. As such, â€Å"chord† is usually found in musical contexts: As soon as I heard the opening chords of â€Å"Born to Run,† I was an instant Springsteen fan. Sometimes â€Å"chord† is also used metaphorically, such as when we say something â€Å"struck a chord† with someone, which means to have made an emotional impact or evoke a reaction: Harriet didn’t care for politics, but the senators speech said had struck a chord with the whole crowd. Cord or Chord? Once you know what these words mean, it’s fairly easy to know which to use in any given situation. Simply ask yourself the following question: Are you describing a length of flexible material or an electrical wire? Or an anatomical structure? If so, use â€Å"cord.† Are you describing something musical? Or using the idiom â€Å"strike a chord†? If so, the term you’ll want is â€Å"chord.† Keep these guidelines in mind to avoid mixing them up in your written work. And to make doubly sure your papers are free from this kind of mistake, you can’t beat the expert eyes of a professional proofreader.

Proportional Representation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Proportional Representation - Essay Example It took different shapes in different countries. While examining its relevance in Canada, one must analyze its nature in some countries like United Kingdom and Germany. MMP is partially implemented in United Kingdom and is commonly known as the additional member system (AMS). Similarly, in Germany it is called as personalized proportional representation. Different theories emerged during last five years regarding the pros and cons of mixed member proportional voting system. However, it is relevant in the present context to examine the views of some authors like John L. Hiemstra, Harold J. Jensen, Christopher Kam, Mark Charlton and Paul Barker regarding the prospects of implementing mixed member proportional representation in Canada (Mark Charlton and Paul Barker. 2005). John L. Hiemstra and Harold J. Jensen opined that the implementation of mixed member representation system certainly benefits the democratic set up of Canada as it allows better representation of higher number of people while progressing towards people’s development. However, they felt that the minor modifications in the existing MMP by taking the experience of some countries like South Africa, Venezuela, New Zealand and Bolivia where MMP is already in practice. By implementing the positive aspects of MMP, Canada would certainly get benefited significantly and the voters would be in a position to derive maximum benefit from democracy. At the same time, more favoring comments from Christopher Kam (2006) encourages the government functionaries of Canada to implement this MMP system immediately with out any second thought. They further pointed out the limitations of the existing voting system in the form of non-uniform representation and hence favored electoral reforms immediately in the form of MMP. However, they cautioned that the people’s awareness regarding the structure of MMP should be enhanced,
